Enemy Aircraft: Nakajima B5N “Kate”

Nakajima B5N Type 97 Carrier Attack Bomber "Kate", Author Unknown, Source Unknown, (PD-Japan-Pre 1947)

The Nakajima B5N torpedo bomber (Allied codename “Kate”) was a single-engine torpedo bomber that played an immensely pivotal role in the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. This distinctive carrier-based aircraft, built by the Nakajima Aircraft Company, became a symbol of Japanese naval air power during World War II.

The B5N was specifically designed to operate from aircraft carriers, extending Japan’s offensive reach across vast stretches of the Pacific Ocean and giving their aircraft carriers a decisive punch. Prior to Pearl Harbor, the Kate had already seen action in the Second Sino-Japanese War. The B5N’s primary mission at Pearl Harbor was a critical one which was crippling American battleships with extremely deadly torpedo attacks. Each B5N was manned by a crew of three: a pilot, a navigator/bombardier responsible for aiming the torpedoes, and a rear gunner who provided defensive fire. The B5N’s design prioritized three key aspects: range, speed, and payload capacity. This combination made it highly versatile for naval operations.

The B5N had a unique appearance, it was a mid-wing monoplane design featuring folding wings storage aboard aircraft carriers. Its power came from a Nakajima Sakae radial engine that was actually capable of propelling the aircraft to a top speed of around 235 miles per hour (378 kilometers per hour). This speed, coupled with a range of approximately 1,930 miles (3,100 kilometers), allowed the B5N to strike targets very far from Japanese aircraft carriers and land bases. While the B5N had only one defensive machine gun for rearward protection, its offensive punch came in the form of the Type 91 aerial torpedo. This aerial torpedo was actually specifically designed for carrier take-off and could inflict very devastating damage on enemy ships.

During the Pearl Harbor attack, waves of B5N bombers targeted American battleships, aircraft carriers, and other strategic assets. These torpedo attacks achieved significant initial success, sinking and heavily damaging several American vessels. However, as the war progressed, Allied forces developed stronger air defenses and more capable fighter planes. This ultimately led to the B5N becoming less effective. As the war continued, the Nakajima B5N was gradually replaced by more advanced Japanese, aircraft designs. Despite its eventual obsolescence, the B5N remains one of the most recognizable Japanese aircraft of World War II. Its participation in the Pearl Harbor attack marked a turning point in the war, pushing the United States into actual global conflict. Historians continue to study the B5N’s role in Pearl Harbor as a pivotal event in military history.

Sadly, very few original Nakajima B5N “Kate” bombers remain. Only a handful of replicas and aircraft are preserved in museums worldwide, serving as reminders of the technological advancements and strategic decisions that shaped World War II. The B5N “Kate” ‘s legacy is complex, but its impact on history is undeniable.
