Battleship Arizona’s Anchor
On display at the visitor’s center is the battleship USS Arizona’s anchor. The anchor weighs 19,585 lbs. and was one of three anchors carried by the battleship USS Arizona. Up to two were used to anchor the ship, depending upon the weather. A third was used as a spare. When the USS Arizona Battleship blew up, one of the Anchors was ejected into the harbor. That anchor is on display at the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center. Another anchor is on display at the Arizona State Capitol. The third is unaccounted for. There are a few other pieces of the USS Arizona battleship that were salvaged, such as a gun barrel, the ship’s bell, the Admiral’s silver set, and various pieces of the superstructure. Some of it, like one of the anchors and the ship’s bell, are on display at the Pearl Harbor Visitor’s Center. A few others, like another anchor, the signal mast, and a gun barrel, are on display in Phoenix, Arizona. During the salvage effort after the attack, as many pieces of equipment as possible were taken off of the wreck of the USS Arizona. Some of it was to be put to use elsewhere. For example, The two rear turrets were emplaced overlooking Kaneohe Bay to be used as coastal defense guns in case of invasion. One turret was known as Battery Arizona, and the other was Battery Pennsylvania. The emplacements were never fully completed because, after a certain point; it had become obvious that the Japanese were in no position to even attempt an invasion of Hawaii, and the resources and manpower would be better used elsewhere.
