On the morning of December 7th, 1941, the world changed forever when the US Navy base at Pearl Harbor was attacked by the Japanese Imperial Navy. The attack on Pearl Harbor was a defining moment in history, and amidst the chaos and tragedy, a young sailor named Francis Flaherty emerged as a symbol of courage and selflessness.
Hailing from Washington D.C., Flaherty served aboard the battleship USS Oklahoma as a Fire Controlman Third Class. When the Japanese attacked, the USS Oklahoma was struck by multiple torpedoes, causing it to capsize rapidly. Flaherty found himself trapped in a compartment below decks, facing a situation that could have easily led to panic. However, Flaherty displayed remarkable composure. Despite the danger, he remained calm and focused on helping his fellow sailors. He assisted in freeing those trapped by wreckage, his strength and quick thinking proving invaluable in the chaotic environment. He even helped pass tools and supplies to others working tirelessly to rescue survivors. Even as the ship began to flood, Flaherty refused to abandon his post or his comrades. He put the safety of others above his own, demonstrating extraordinary courage and selflessness. This selfless act, however, ultimately cost him his life.
While Flaherty’s life was tragically cut short, his actions ensured the survival of many others. His bravery was recognized with the highest honor the United States can bestow: the Medal of Honor. The citation for his award praised his “conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity,” highlighting the exceptional courage he displayed in the face of overwhelming danger. Francis Flaherty’s story became synonymous with the heroism displayed during the attack on Pearl Harbor. His sacrifice and dedication to his fellow sailors continue to inspire generations. His name is inscribed on the Tablets of the Missing at the USS Oklahoma Memorial, serving as a permanent reminder of his bravery.
Flaherty’s legacy goes beyond the battlefield. He embodies the highest ideals of service and sacrifice, reminding us that true heroes are often found in ordinary people who rise to the occasion in extraordinary circumstances. His story serves as a testament to the human spirit’s ability to overcome adversity and display selfless courage in the face of unimaginable challenges.
Francis Flaherty, the hero of the USS Oklahoma, will forever be remembered as a symbol of courage, selflessness, and unwavering dedication to his fellow human beings.
