Pearl Harbor, a serene naval base in Hawaii, became the site of one of the most devastating attacks in American history on December 7, 1941. Among the many brave souls who displayed extraordinary courage that day was Herbert C. Jones. His story concerns courage, sacrifice, and unwavering dedication to his fellow sailors.

Herbert Charpoit Jones was born in Los Angeles, California on January 21, 1918. In a patriotic family, Jones developed a strong sense of duty and commitment from an early age. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1935, beginning a promising military career that would later place him at the heart of one of the most pivotal moments in American history. He spent much of his youth enjoying the sunny California climate. Despite his love for fun, Jones had a deep sense of duty, inspired by his father’s military service. Determined to follow in his father’s footsteps, Jones enlisted in the United States Naval Reserves on May 14, 1935, at 17. His dedication and hard work paid off, and within five years, he was commissioned as an ensign in the US Navy, serving aboard the USS California (BB-44), a Tennessee-class battleship stationed at Pearl Harbor.

Pearl Harbor Attack

December 7, 1941, is forever etched in history as the day the Imperial Japanese Navy launched a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. This devastating assault resulted in the loss of over 2,400 American lives and propelled the United States into World War II. The attack left much of the Pacific Fleet crippled, including battleships, destroyers, and aircraft.

At the time of the attack, Herbert C. Jones was serving as an Ensign aboard the USS California, a battleship stationed at Pearl Harbor. As the chaos unfolded, the tranquility of the morning of December 7, 1941, was shattered as the skies over Oahu filled with the thunderous roar of Imperial Japanese Navy aircraft. Their mission: to cripple the US Pacific Fleet anchored at Pearl Harbor. As Jones was about to relieve the officer of the deck, he witnessed the sudden and fierce assault. Japanese planes swooped down, unleashing a barrage of torpedoes and bombs.

USS California was struck hard, and smoke began to fill the vessel. Amidst the chaos, Jones remained resolute. He navigated through the smoke-filled ship, rescuing an injured sailor despite being momentarily overcome by the fumes. After regaining consciousness, he refused to abandon his duty. Continuing his search, he found an anti-aircraft battery without a leader and took command. Under his leadership, the crew fired back at the attacking aircraft. Jones organized a volunteer team to manually bring shells from the magazines below deck when the battery’s ammunition ran out.

While moving the shells, another bomb struck the USS California, and Jones was mortally wounded in the blast. His selfless actions and leadership in the face of imminent danger embodied the true spirit of heroism. Herbert C. Jones’ bravery and sacrifice on that fateful day were later recognized posthumously with the Medal of Honor, the highest military decoration awarded by the United States government.
