Kawaiahao Church
Built in 1843, Kawaiahao church is one of the oldest Christian Churches in Hawaii. The church was designed by the leader of the Christian Mission to Hawaii, Hiram Bingham. Funding was secured through the Hawaiian Royal Family who were among the first to convert to Christianity. The Christian mission to Hawaii was main driving force in putting the Hawaiian Language in writing with many of the passages of the Bible being translated into Hawaiian. A full translation of the Bible is available today. The church is still active to this day and is administered by the United Church of Christ. In a tradition going back to the founding of the church, part of the sermon is delivered in the Hawaiian language.
Punchbowl
Called the “Arlington of the Pacific,” the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, also known as Punchbowl cemetery was founded in 1949. The Cemetery contains over 61,000 graves. The cemetery is the final resting place for Veterans from WWI to today and their families. There are still a number of graves from WWII and the Korean War marked as Unknown. The central memorial is dedicated to those soldiers and sailors who are Missing in Action, unrecovered, or who were buried at sea. The most famous feature of that memorial is the sculpture of Lady Columbia which was featured in both versions of Hawaii Five-O.
Nuuanu Pali
Since ancient times the Nuuanu Pali was an important road through the Koolau Mountains that separate the Windward from the Leeward side of the Island. The Nuuanu Pali was the site of a fierce battle between the chief of Maui and Kamehameha during his conquest of the Islands. Kamehameha backed his opponent’s army into a valley and forced hundreds of them off of a cliff near where the Nuuanu Pali Lookout is today. The lookout point on the Pali has a beautiful view of the Windward side of the Island. There are many superstitions and ghost stories associated with the Nuuanu Pali.
Dole Plantation
James Dole started the Hawaiian Pineapple Company in 1901. From the plantation that was established on the North Shore of Oahu, Dole became a worldwide company and a household name in fruit. The Dole plantation today is a recreation of the Plantation life in Hawaii in the early 20th century. Built on the what was former pineapple fields once owned by the Dole family, Its buildings are based on the types that were in use in the days of the plantation in Hawaii. If you find yourself there, one thing worth trying is the famous Dole whip ice cream.
