Here are some points of Interest that you will see on your tour:
Tree of Life
The tree of life is a sculpture in Pearl Harbor located at the Pearl Harbor Visitor’s Center just outside of the “Road to War exhibit gallery.” The sculpture was designed by Alfred Preis, who also designed the Arizona Memorial Monument. The sculpture is meant to be a symbol of renewal and inspire contemplation. While you are at Pearl Harbor, be sure to check out this unique work of art. Don’t forget to also visit the exhibit galleries “Road to War” and “Attack.”
Pearl Harbor Bookstore
Don’t forget to check out the Pearl Harbor Visitor’s Center Bookstore. The bookstore is operated by the nonprofit Pacific Historic Parks. In addition to history books and reference materials, the bookstore offers a wide array of souvenirs and keepsakes. A portion of the proceeds goes toward funding the Pearl Harbor National Memorial. One unique gift option that the bookstore offers are the USS Arizona Memorial flags. These are flags flown over the Arizona Memorial. Each day the flag over the Arizona Memorial is raised and lowered. Each day a new flag is flown. A flag may be ordered that is to be flown on a specific date. Once the flag is lowered, it is folded in the traditional fashion, packed together with a certificate and personalized message, and shipped to the buyer. There are date restrictions such as flags flown on December 7, the Fourth of July, or Memorial Day and on days that Pearl Harbor National Memorial is closed.
Washington Place
Washington Place was the residence of the Governor of the State of Hawaii from 1921 until it was named a National Historic Landmark in 2007. The Governor currently resides in a separate house on the same property. The residence was built in the 1840s and was the home of the Dominis family. John Owen Dominis would eventually marry the future Queen of Hawaii, Liliuokalani. Upon the death of John Dominis, the house would pass to the Queen. Washington Place was the main site of the overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawaii and the location where the Queen was arrested at its conclusion. She resided in the house until her death in 1917.
Chinaman’s Hat
As you drive by Kaneohe Bay, you will notice a conical Islet Many of the locals know it as Chinaman’s Hat. Looking at it, it is clear how it got that name. The Hawaiian name for it is Mokolii. Mokolii is owned by the City and County of Honolulu and is managed by State and Federal wildlife services. The islet is a nesting place for seabirds and is home to many species of native plants, some of which are critically endangered. Once part of the main Island, until erosion separated it, the Islet is accessible by kayak, boat, swimming, or wading at low tide. One can visit the Islet during daylight hours.
